Understanding Case Status — Common Terms
Next Date / Next Hearing Date
The next scheduled date for your case in court. Nothing happens on other days.
Purpose of Next Date
What is scheduled for the next date — Arguments, Evidence, Final Hearing, Judgment, etc.
Disposal / Disposed
The case has been decided by the court. A final order or judgment has been passed.
Stay / Stayed
An interim order pausing some action — often execution of a lower court order — until further hearing.
Ex Parte
The case proceeded and was decided without one party appearing — usually the defendant/respondent.
Remand / Remanded
A higher court has sent the case back to a lower court for fresh hearing or reconsideration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I don't have the case number — how do I find my case?
A: Use the 'Party Name' search on ecourts.gov.in. Enter your name (or the opposite party's name), select the state and district, and you'll get a list of matching cases. You can then click on the case for full details.
Q: What does 'Next Date' mean in the case status?
A: 'Next Date' is the next scheduled hearing date for the case. 'Purpose' next to the date tells you what is scheduled — arguments, evidence, judgment, etc.
Q: How do I get a copy of a court order or judgment?
A: After finding your case on eCourts, click on 'Orders' or 'Judgments' tab within the case page. Most subordinate court orders are uploaded within 24-48 hours. For older cases, visit the court's record room in person.
Q: The case is not showing on eCourts — what should I do?
A: Not all cases are digitised yet, especially older cases filed before 2010. Visit the court's filing counter with the case number and ask the staff. Some courts have partial digitisation.
Q: Can I get hearing date notifications automatically?
A: Yes. Download the eCourts app and 'subscribe' to a case. You will receive push notifications when a new date is posted or an order is uploaded.
Q: How do I check a Supreme Court case?
A: Visit sci.gov.in, click 'Case Status', enter your case number (Diary Number or Case Number), and select the year. SC orders are also available on the Judgment portal.
