Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply for a passport without a birth certificate?
A: Yes. If you don't have a birth certificate, you can use other documents as proof of date of birth: Class X or XII marksheet showing DOB, Aadhaar card, or an affidavit in prescribed format. However, a birth certificate is strongly preferred and accepted without question.
Q: My passport is expiring in 6 months — should I renew now?
A: Yes. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel dates. Apply for renewal immediately. The process takes 30–45 days normally, faster with Tatkaal.
Q: Can a child travel on a parent's passport?
A: No. Every person including infants requires their own individual passport. Apply for a minor's passport at passportindia.gov.in. Parents must carry their own passports and the child's birth certificate.
Q: What is ECR and ECNR in passport?
A: ECR (Emigration Check Required) is on passports of people who haven't passed Class X. They need emigration clearance before working in 17 specified ECR countries (Gulf, Malaysia, etc.). ECNR (no clearance required) is for Class X pass holders. You can convert ECR to ECNR by submitting educational certificates.
Q: My appointment at PSK was missed — what do I do?
A: Login to passportindia.gov.in and reschedule your appointment. You can reschedule up to 3 times within 1 year of application. After 3 reschedules, you'll need to start a fresh application.
