Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the complete syllabus for UPSC Civil Services Mains GS Papers?

UPSC Mains has 4 GS papers: GS-I (Indian Heritage, History, Geography, Society), GS-II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, International Relations), GS-III (Economy, Agriculture, Science & Technology, Environment, Disaster Management, Security), GS-IV (Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude). Plus Essay paper (250 marks), Optional subject (2 papers × 250 marks = 500 marks), and two qualifying language papers.

Q.What are the most popular optional subjects in UPSC?

The most popular optional subjects are: Public Administration, Sociology, History, Geography, Political Science & International Relations (PSIR), Anthropology, Philosophy, and Law. Candidates should choose based on their graduation background, interest, and availability of good study material rather than just pass percentage.

Q.How many attempts are allowed for UPSC CSE?

General category: 6 attempts (between age 21–32). OBC: 9 attempts (21–35). SC/ST: unlimited attempts till upper age limit of 37. PwBD (General/OBC): 9 attempts. A 'attempt' is counted only when you actually appear in Prelims — not when you just apply.

Q.What is the UPSC Prelims cut-off and negative marking pattern?

UPSC Prelims has two papers: GS Paper-I (200 marks, 100 questions) and CSAT Paper-II (200 marks, 80 questions — qualifying, minimum 33% required). There is negative marking of 1/3rd for wrong answers. Cut-off varies each year by category — typically between 90–115 marks for General out of 200 in GS Paper-I.

Q.Can I change my optional subject after applying?

You cannot change the optional subject after the Detailed Application Form (DAF) is submitted for Mains. The optional subject selected at DAF stage is final. Choose carefully as it affects 500 of the 1750 Mains marks (excluding Interview).

Q.Is coaching necessary to crack UPSC?

No, coaching is not mandatory. Many toppers have cleared UPSC without coaching or through online resources alone. However, coaching can provide structure, test series, and mentorship. What is essential is a consistent study plan covering the entire syllabus, regular revision, answer writing practice, and current affairs reading.

Q.What happens after Mains — how is the final merit list made?

After Mains, candidates scoring above the cut-off are called for Personality Test (Interview) worth 275 marks. Final merit list = Mains marks (written) + Interview marks. Mains written carries 1750 marks. Total possible = 2025 marks. Service and cadre allocation is done based on rank, preference list, and available vacancies.
