Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a Pakistani or Bangladeshi national get an OCI card?
A: No. Citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh (and their spouses) are not eligible for OCI cards, regardless of their Indian origin.
Q: Do OCI card holders have voting rights in India?
A: No. OCI card holders cannot vote in Indian elections, cannot hold constitutional posts (President, Vice-President, Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha member), and cannot serve in government/defence services.
Q: I got OCI as a child — do I need to re-issue it?
A: Yes. Re-issuance is mandatory when a new passport is issued before age 20 (due to change in appearance) and once after age 50. This is because OCI is linked to a specific passport number.
Q: Can I travel to India on OCI card alone (without foreign passport)?
A: No. You must always carry both your OCI card AND your valid foreign passport when travelling to India. The OCI card cannot be used as a standalone travel document.
Q: Can I apply for OCI online from India?
A: Yes. You can apply online from anywhere in the world at indianvisaonline.gov.in. However, you must submit physical documents (originals or attested copies) to the nearest Indian Mission or designated VFS centre.
Q: How long does OCI processing take?
A: Processing times vary by country and Indian mission. Typically 8-12 weeks from the date of document submission. You can track your application status online at indianvisaonline.gov.in.
