❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Q.How do I find the PIO of my municipal corporation?
Visit your municipal corporation's official website and search for 'RTI' or 'Public Information Officer'. Most corporations publish a list of PIOs by department. If not found, address your RTI to 'The Municipal Commissioner' — under Section 6(3), they must forward it to the right PIO within 5 days.
Q.Can I send the same RTI to multiple departments?
You should send one RTI to the relevant department. If your query spans multiple departments, file separate RTIs for each. Do not send bulk RTIs to unrelated departments — it may be treated as frivolous.
Q.What if the information I seek involves a private contractor?
Under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act, information held by a public authority (like a municipality) about a private contractor — contract terms, payments, performance — is accessible. File the RTI with the municipal PIO, not the contractor.
Q.Can I get copies of tendered documents and contracts?
Yes. Tender documents, awarded contracts, bills paid, and completion certificates held by the municipality are public documents. Request certified copies and be prepared to pay ₹2 per page for photocopies.
Q.What is the difference between RTI and a public grievance complaint?
A grievance complaint asks the government to fix a problem. An RTI asks for information about what has been done or not done. You can file both simultaneously — an RTI often forces faster resolution of a grievance because officials know you are tracking the paper trail.
