📋 Overview

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on 28 August 2014 as India's National Mission for Financial Inclusion. The scheme aims to ensure that every household has access to banking, savings, credit, insurance, and pension services. As of 2026, over 53 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened across India. Key benefits of a PMJDY account: - Zero minimum balance requirement — no penalty for zero balance - RuPay debit card issued free of cost for all transactions - ₹2 lakh accident insurance cover (for accounts opened after 28 August 2018; ₹1 lakh for older accounts) - ₹30,000 life insurance cover via PMJJBY (for eligible account holders aged 18–50) - ₹5,000 overdraft in the first 6 months of account operation, rising to ₹10,000 after 6 months of satisfactory operation. Available to one account holder per household. - Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) gateway — all government subsidies (PM Kisan, PMUY, scholarships) are credited directly - Access to insurance and pension products (PMJJBY, PMSBY, APY) Accounts can be opened at any scheduled commercial bank, regional rural bank, small finance bank, payments bank, or post office. Bank Mitras (Business Correspondents) in rural areas facilitate account opening. A "small account" (with simplified KYC) can be opened if you don't have official KYC documents — these are valid for 12 months and can be upgraded.

⚠️Common Problems & Solutions

Bank is asking for minimum balance or refusing to open a zero-balance PMJDY account
Under RBI's Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account guidelines, all banks must offer zero-minimum-balance accounts. If a bank insists on minimum balance for a PMJDY account, report this to the RBI Banking Ombudsman at rbi.org.in or call 14448. You can also switch to another bank or post office that is more cooperative.
RuPay card not received even after 2 weeks
Visit the bank branch and check if the card has been dispatched. Ensure your address recorded in the bank matches your current address. If the card was dispatched but returned, request re-dispatch at the branch. You can also use your account for transactions via internet banking or at the branch while waiting for the card.
Account shows 'dormant' or 'inoperative' — cannot transact
An account becomes dormant if there is no transaction for 2 years. Visit the bank branch with your Aadhaar and passbook. Request reactivation — the bank must reactivate it for free. Complete one transaction (deposit ₹1 or withdraw ₹1) to make it active. Ensure your DBT benefits are flowing in to keep the account active.
Overdraft (OD) not available on my Jan Dhan account
The OD facility starts at ₹5,000 in the first 6 months and rises to ₹10,000 after 6 months of satisfactory account operation. It is available to one account holder per household. Visit the branch and apply for OD. Conditions: account must be active with regular deposits/withdrawals and no defaults. The OD is not automatic — you must apply for it at the branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the difference between Jan Dhan account and a regular savings account?

A Jan Dhan / Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account has zero minimum balance requirement, free RuPay card, and is linked to government insurance schemes. A regular savings account may have a minimum balance requirement (₹1,000–₹10,000). The BSBD account has some transaction limits (4 free withdrawals per month). For government benefit transfers (DBT), both types work, but PMJDY accounts are pre-configured for DBT.

Q.Is the ₹2 lakh accident insurance automatic or do I need to enrol?

The ₹2 lakh RuPay card accident insurance is automatically available on Jan Dhan accounts opened after 28 August 2018, provided you have performed at least one transaction in the 90 days preceding the accident. No separate enrolment is needed. For accounts opened before August 2018, the cover is ₹1 lakh. The claim is processed through the bank.

Q.Can I open a Jan Dhan account online from home?

Some banks (like SBI, Bank of Baroda) allow pre-application online, but physical KYC verification at a branch or Bank Mitra is required for full-feature account. However, using Aadhaar OTP eKYC, the account can be opened instantly at any bank branch or Bank Mitra without additional documents.

Q.Will all my PM Kisan, PMUY, and scholarship money come to the Jan Dhan account?

Yes. Jan Dhan accounts are DBT-enabled by default. Once you link your Jan Dhan account number to Aadhaar (NPCI mapping), all government direct benefit transfers — PM Kisan, LPG subsidy, scholarships, MGNREGA wages — automatically flow into this account. Ensure NPCI-Aadhaar-bank mapping is active by visiting the bank.

Q.What happens if my Jan Dhan account Aadhaar link is not working for DBT?

If DBT payments are not reaching your account, the issue is usually NPCI mapping. Visit the bank branch and request NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) Aadhaar seeding — they activate the mapping between your Aadhaar and bank account. This is essential for all government benefit transfers. You can also check NPCI mapping status at npci.org.in/aadhaar-mapper.
