❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Is Voter ID mandatory for voting?

Voter ID (EPIC) is the primary identity document for voting, but the Election Commission of India has authorised 12 alternate photo IDs at polling booths since 2019 — including Aadhaar, PAN card, passport, driving licence, MGNREGA job card, bank passbook with photo, health insurance smart card, pension document, and service identity card. However, having your EPIC makes the process faster and is universally accepted without question at every booth in Delhi.

Q.How to find your polling booth in Delhi?

Go to voters.eci.gov.in → click "Know Your Polling Station" → enter your EPIC number or address. Alternatively, download the Voter Helpline App (available on Play Store and App Store) and use the "Search Polling Station" feature. You can also call the national voter helpline 1950 to get your booth details over the phone. The CEO Delhi portal at https://ceodelhi.nic.in also has a booth locator.

Q.Can I be enrolled in 2 states?

No. Every Indian citizen can only be enrolled on one state's electoral roll — the state where they ordinarily reside. Being enrolled in two constituencies simultaneously is an offence under Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and can lead to cancellation of both enrollments. If you move from one state to another, you must delete your name from the old constituency (Form 7) and register fresh in the new one (Form 6).

Q.How to vote if I'm away from Delhi on election day?

If you are a government or defence service voter, you can vote by postal ballot — apply through your employer. For all other voters, you must physically be present at your designated polling booth in Delhi to vote — there is no proxy or online voting option. Plan ahead: many employers in India allow employees to take the day off on election day under the Negotiable Instruments Act. If you are a migrant worker registered in Delhi, you must return to your home booth to vote.

Q.What is e-EPIC and is it legally valid?

e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card) is a digitally signed PDF version of your Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India. It carries a QR code for verification and is legally equivalent to the physical EPIC card. Download it free at voters.eci.gov.in → "Download e-EPIC" using your EPIC number and registered mobile OTP. Once downloaded, you can print it or show it from your phone at the polling booth. No need to carry the physical card if you have e-EPIC on your phone.
