📋 Overview

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) was launched in 2017 under the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD). It provides conditional cash transfers to pregnant and lactating women to compensate for wage loss, improve nutrition, and encourage institutional delivery and breastfeeding. PMMVY structure: For the 1st living child — ₹5,000 in 3 instalments: - 1st instalment: ₹1,000 — on registration of pregnancy in 1st trimester at Anganwadi/health facility - 2nd instalment: ₹2,000 — after child is born and first cycle of childhood vaccination complete (at 6 weeks) - 3rd instalment: ₹2,000 — after child's first cycle of vaccination at 14 weeks For the 2nd child (girl child only) — ₹6,000 as a single instalment: - Paid after the girl child's birth and birth registration (under Mission Shakti component) Additional benefit: Eligible women who deliver in government health facilities receive additional ₹1,000 under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) — not part of PMMVY but complementary. All payments are DBT — credited to the beneficiary woman's Aadhaar-linked bank account. Over 3.4 crore women have benefited since launch.

⚠️Common Problems & Solutions

Pregnancy not registered within 150 days of LMP — am I still eligible?
Late registration may result in losing the 1st instalment (₹1,000). However, you can still register before delivery and claim the 2nd instalment (₹2,000) after child's 6-week vaccination, and the 3rd instalment (₹2,000) after 14-week vaccination. Visit the Anganwadi immediately — do not delay further. Some states may be flexible on the deadline — check with your district WCD office.
Payment not received even after submitting documents at Anganwadi
Check if the AWW has submitted your application in the PMMVY-CAS portal — ask for the application number. Ensure your bank account is Aadhaar-linked (NPCI mapping active). If the bank account link is fine and application is submitted, the payment should arrive within 30 days. For delays beyond 60 days, contact the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of your block.
Bank account is in husband's name, not mine — payment failing
PMMVY requires the bank account to be in the woman's (beneficiary's) name for DBT. Open a Jan Dhan account at any bank — free, zero minimum balance, opened with just Aadhaar. Then update your bank account in the PMMVY registration at the Anganwadi. Future payments will go to your account.
Second child is a girl — how to claim the ₹6,000 Mission Shakti benefit
Visit the Anganwadi Centre after the girl child's birth with: birth certificate showing the girl child's gender, your Aadhaar, and bank passbook. The AWW registers the claim under the Mission Shakti component. The ₹6,000 is a single lump-sum instalment paid after birth registration. No vaccination condition applies for this instalment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Does PMMVY apply to the 2nd child if it is a boy?

No. The additional ₹6,000 for the 2nd child under Mission Shakti is only for a girl child. If your 2nd child is a boy, there is no PMMVY benefit for the 2nd child. PMMVY's main benefit (₹5,000) is only for the first living child — regardless of gender.

Q.Is PMMVY available for women who deliver in a private hospital?

Yes. Delivery location (government or private hospital) does not disqualify you from PMMVY. The benefit is tied to pregnancy registration (at Anganwadi or Sub-Centre) and child vaccination (at any government or private facility), not the delivery location. However, the ₹1,000 JSY cash incentive under Janani Suraksha Yojana requires institutional delivery at a government facility.

Q.What if the child is stillborn or dies shortly after birth?

PMMVY policy states that in case of stillbirth or neonatal death (child dies very shortly after birth), you may register for the 1st instalment of ₹1,000 (if pregnancy was registered in 1st trimester). Future births would be counted as per the PMMVY guidelines. Consult the Anganwadi Worker for guidance specific to your situation.

Q.Can government employees avail PMMVY?

No. Central and state government employees (permanent, contractual, or daily wage) are not eligible for PMMVY as they receive maternity benefits under service rules or the Maternity Benefit Act. If you have recently left government service, consult the district WCD office for eligibility determination.

Q.Can I apply for PMMVY directly online without going to Anganwadi?

Technically, the PMMVY-CAS (Computerised Application Software) portal is for Anganwadi Workers to register beneficiaries. Direct self-registration by beneficiaries is not fully implemented at all states. Some states offer the option through their state women and child welfare portals. In practice, visit the Anganwadi — AWW will register you online immediately.
